About product

Hobby 2000 Masking Tape For Curves 5 mm x 18 m

A five-millimeter masking tape from the curve line For Curves by Hobby 2000, a roll of 18 m. It is a modeling aid, not a kit: nothing is built from it, and it is used to cover a surface while spraying.

Three things set it apart from ordinary adhesive tape, and they decide the result: low, controlled tack (it holds, but it does not lift paint or primer when it comes off), a sharply cut edge (paint has no way in under it) and the fact that it leaves no adhesive residue. On top of that the tape is stretchy: it can be stretched slightly as it goes down and the tension released in a curve, so it does not crease and no channels form for paint to run under.

Use

  • Plainly and without circling the point: the wider the tape, the gentler the curve it can handle. Five millimeters is the widest choice in this line and is therefore meant only for gentle curves and large radii; in a tight arc even a flexible 5 mm tape will not cope and a narrower one is needed.
  • Rounded fuselages, keels and large-area curved transitions.
  • Wide curved bands of camouflage, where laying thin tapes up would be slow.
  • Quickly covering a larger area along a smooth curve, where 5 mm saves work and time.
  • Once it is down, press the edge with a fingernail or a toothpick along its whole length.
  • Peel it off slowly and at a shallow angle back across itself, never perpendicular to the model.

Who it is for

For modelers who mask large areas with a smooth curvature and do not want to use up meters of thin tape on it. The curve line is complemented by the straight Precision line from Hobby 2000, meant for straight lines and sharp color divisions; having both in the workshop makes sense, because a straight tape fails on a curve and a flexible tape adds nothing on a straight line.

A modeling aid, not a kit. Stick it only onto thoroughly dried paint; do not rely on masking over fresh paint or after a long rest without a test in a hidden area.

FAQ

No. Even though the tape is stretchy, a width of five millimeters creases on the inside of a tight curve. The rule is simple: the narrower the tape, the tighter the arc it can handle. For tight radii reach for the 3 mm or 2 mm version, and leave 5 mm for gentle curves and large areas.

It saves work. On a rounded fuselage or a large-area curved transition it covers in one pass what you would otherwise lay up from several thin tapes, and that also lowers the risk of a leaking joint between them.

It has a strong, uncontrolled adhesive that takes paint and primer with it when it comes off, a coarser edge that paint runs under, and it leaves sticky residue. Modeling tape is built precisely against those three problems.

Once the tape is down, press the edge with a toothpick or a fingernail, spray thin coats and do not flood the edge with paint. Take the mask off slowly and at a shallow angle as soon as the paint has dried, not perpendicular and not after several days.
