Mechanical Kangaroo Two Leg Jumping Type is a Tamiya construction kit of a jumping robot with a transparent body which, depending on the gearing set, either hops upright or walks on all fours.

A construction kit from the mechanical robotic range of the Japanese company Tamiya. The model pushes off with its hind legs and hops forward, and its body is made of transparent orange ABS, so the motor, the gears, the cranks and the linkages are visible in motion. The switch is transparent as well. It is not a scaled-down version of the animal, but a working mechanical model on which you try out how the rotation of a motor is turned into a push-off and a step.
The motor drives the hind legs through the gearbox, and they move at the same time and push the model forward. The behavior can be changed fundamentally by the choice of gear ratio while it is still being built. With the fast gearing and the linkages hung in the lower holes of the front legs, the model hops upright and balances itself with its tail. With the slow gearing and the linkages in the upper holes, it moves on all four legs. The motor, the gearbox and the control switch are in the package, and a screwdriver is enclosed as well. Power is supplied by one AA battery, which the manufacturer does not supply. The manufacturer states roughly three hours of continuous running with the slow gearing and about an hour with the fast one.
The build is simple; the parts are screwed and snapped together and no soldering is needed. Decide first which version you want to try, as changing the gearing later means partly taking it apart. Tighten the screws in the joints so that the linkages can be turned freely. The model needs a level floor with a little grip and free space in front of it. Painting is not needed, and on the transparent parts it would suppress the main merit of the set.
The set is supplied unassembled. Batteries are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
