A hand modeling file from the Japanese brand Mineshima with a square section to its working part. It belongs to the Medium series, that is, to the middle coarseness the brand offers. This is the position a file is used in most often: it takes off noticeably more material than the finest types, but does not leave scratches so coarse that the mark could not be finished with abrasive paper.
What a square section can do
A square section has four flat working faces and sharp edges. Thanks to that it reaches into right-angled corners, into grooves and up to the inner walls of square openings, where neither a round nor a half-round file meets the surface with its whole face. A flat face at the same time keeps the worked surface flat and creates no bulge, which shows when evening out parting lines or the mating surfaces of two fuselage or hull halves.
File plastic with a pull in one direction and lift the tool on the return stroke. Filing back and forth clogs the teeth with plastic swarf and the file stops biting. Clean clogged teeth with a soft brush. On thin walls, work in small steps and keep dry-fitting the parts, because material once taken off cannot be put back. Finish the mark left by the file with abrasive paper of a finer grit, otherwise it will stay visible under the paint.
For modelers who build plastic kits and want the edges and joints clean before painting. It suits as a complement to finer files and abrasive papers, not as the only tool for all the work.
