Medium Green

The medium green as the basis of a whole scene

Of all the shades of green it is the medium one that is used most on a model landscape. It matches deciduous growth in full summer, it is not as loud as a spring tone and it does not thicken into black the way conifer needles do. When a landscape is built from nothing, it is usually this tone that is started with: most areas are covered with it and only then are light and dark places brought into it, so that the growth gains a sculptural quality.

The properties of the mass

The material consists of a flexible net-like structure covered with colored granulate. It is coarser than the foliage for undergrowth, so once torn it holds its volume and does not collapse. The large package carries 945 cm³ and is intended for more extensive areas, where a smaller bag would barely be enough for one tree. The material has no fixed scale: it depends only on how small the pieces you tear are.

Advice on application

The mass is glued to terrain with thinned PVA glue, on tree frameworks a gel glue that does not run has proved best. It is advisable to work in small parts and to keep stepping back, so that a place where the glue has already set is not overlooked. Color transitions look better when two shades are mixed in the fingers before being glued on. The package holds the green mass itself with no further accessories.

Combining with other materials

A green mass comes to the fore only in the company of other surfaces. Under bushes there tends to be earth or leaf litter, between them grass of a different length and by water reeds. A sharp transition between greenery and bare terrain gives a model away faster than anything else, which is why the edges are always blurred with a scatter.
