Anyone who scribes regularly usually does not stop at a single width of tip. Swapping tips in one handle during the work takes time and risks crushing a thin tip on the bench. It is more practical to have several handles and tell them apart by color — orange is besides impossible to miss on a bench, which is handy on a tool whose tip should always be in view. The technique itself does not change: hold the handle square to the surface, scribe with several light strokes toward you and let the weight of the tool do the work. Metal has better balance than plastic, so the tip holds the line even without pressure. Set the line out in advance with masking tape or a flexible ruler and sweep the dust away with a brush as you go.
