About product

Eduard masking set 1:72 MiG-29 9-12

This item is not a kit and not a set of parts. It is a masking set for a model of the Soviet frontline fighter MiG-29 in the 9-12 version in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker Eduard. The masks are supplied pre-cut and self-adhesive, so the most tedious part of painting a model falls away: tracing the canopy frames onto masking tape, cutting them out with a scalpel and repairing cuts that have wandered. Which parts of the glazing the set covers can be checked in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The MiG-29 is a twin-engined frontline fighter with a pair of vertical tail surfaces and a characteristic blended transition from the wing into the fuselage. The version designated 9-12 is the initial production rendering, which in the NATO code carries the name Fulcrum-A. It is precisely this variant that is the most frequent choice for modelers, because it turns up with the widest circle of users of the type.

How to work with the masks

Lift the mask off its carrier with fine-tipped tweezers and lay it on a dry, degreased clear part. With a finger or a toothpick press it down all the way round, so that no paint seeps under the edge. Spray several thin coats rather than one heavy one, otherwise a ridge forms at the edge. Take the mask off while the paint has only just dried, not after several days, and pull it at a sharp angle rather than straight up. Residues of adhesive on the glazing are removed by gentle polishing. If you are masking for two camouflage colors as well, let the first coat dry thoroughly.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the MiG-29 in 1:72 scale and want cleanly separated sprayed canopy frames.
  • Those who want to avoid cutting masks out of tape.
  • Airbrush modelers working with sharp sprayed edges.
  • Collectors of modern jet aircraft in the small scale.

This is an accessory to a kit. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set, that is an accessory for painting. The MiG-29 kit in 1:72 scale itself has to be obtained separately.

The name does not give a particular kit. Eduard masks are usually cut to the shape of the glazing of one specific model, so it is worth checking which MiG-29 9-12 kit you are building.

No, they are supplied cut. It is enough to peel them off the carrier, lay them on the clear part and press them down all the way round, so that no paint seeps under the edge.

Shortly after the paint has dried and by pulling at a sharp angle. After a longer time the adhesive dries on and peeling it off tends to be more work.
