About product

NATO Black 17 ml — AK

A modeling paint in a bottle of 17 ml. This is not a kit — it is the shade alone. The binder is lacquer (nitro), not acrylic: the paint is thinned with the lacquer thinner of the same line, never with water. It dries to a finely flat surface and in thin coats it does not fill engraving or fine detail.

The black component of NATO camouflage

NATO Black is the black of the three colors of the standardized NATO camouflage, introduced in the 1980s for vehicles operating in the wooded landscape of central Europe. The scheme is made up of three shades:

  • green — the base, load-bearing color,
  • brown — the disruptive patches,
  • black — this shade, the supplementary patches and shadows.

The green goes on as the base and the brown and black form the disruptive pattern over it. The black alone will not give you the scheme — you also need the remaining two colors of the NATO trio.

It is not a pure black, and that is a good thing

One essential point that modelers often underrate: this black is deliberately subdued, closer to a very dark gray-black than to coal. That matches the real camouflage black, which was never absolute, and at the same time it solves the classic problem of scale: a pure, saturated black on a model swallows detail — engraving, rivets and shadows all disappear in so dark an area and the surface looks like a dead hole. A subdued shade lets the detail breathe and reads more convincingly in miniature.

Use

  • The black patches of the three-color NATO camouflage from the 1980s to the present.
  • Combined with NATO green and brown for the complete scheme.
  • Dark details, tires and shading, where a coal black would be too harsh.
  • Airbrush: thin coats, thinned with the lacquer thinner of the line, not with water.

Who it is for

For builders of modern military vehicles — tanks, armored vehicles and wheeled vehicles in NATO camouflage — and for anyone looking for a scale black that does not kill detail.

The paint is flammable and solvent-based. Work in a well-ventilated area, wear a respirator when spraying and protect your skin and eyes. This is not a kit — the paint is sold on its own.

FAQ

No. Although the shade is often listed among acrylic paints, it is a lacquer-based (nitro) paint. Thin it with the lacquer thinner intended for this line, not with water.

Because camouflage black was never coal black, and on a model it would not work anyway. A pure black in small scale swallows engraving, rivets and shadows, and the surface looks like a dead hole. A subdued shade lets the detail stand out.

Not on its own. The three-color NATO camouflage is built on green, brown and black. The green serves as the base and the brown and black form the disruptive pattern, so you need the other two colors as well.

The standardized three-color NATO camouflage for vehicles was introduced in the 1980s and, with variations, is still in use today.
