Riveting wheel 1.2 mm from the Czech maker 3Detail creates regular rows of rivet dimples on the surface of a model with a spacing of 1.2 mm. It replaces pricking by hand with a needle, where the spacing never comes out even.

A riveting wheel is a tool for indicating riveted joints on the surface of a model. It creates a row of small dimples at a fixed spacing, in this case 1.2 mm. The spacing is the key figure: it determines which scale the tool suits, because the rivets have to match the density of the joints on the real structure. A larger spacing is therefore more at home in large scales; in small scales a row of rivets would look coarse. The manufacturer offers riveting wheels in several spacings so that they can be chosen to suit the model being built.
The tool is guided along a ruler or a flexible template with an even stroke and light pressure. Always try the pressure on a scrap of plastic first: too much pressure will go through a thin wall, too little will leave a barely visible mark. On curved surfaces use a flexible ruler made of thin plastic or a strip of paper card. After riveting, sand the surface lightly with very fine abrasive paper, which removes the material pushed up around the dimples. The rivets come into their own only after a coat of primer and after gentle emphasis with a dark wash.
The tool has a sharp working part. Keep out of the reach of children and always try the pressure on scrap material first.
