A base fulfils two roles at once: it holds a model stably and separates it from the surface, so that a figure on a table or in a display case does not look as though it were floating. Under a display figure a black base behaves neutrally and does not take attention away from the colors of the model.
If you want to bring the base into a scene, start by roughening the surface with fine abrasive paper; smooth plastic holds neither glues nor texture pastes well. Then apply texture paste, sand or grit, paint the surface once dry and add grass clumps or small accessories. It is customary to leave the side edge black or to go over it separately, which makes a clean frame around the scene. Before painting, working the figure and the base separately and joining them only at the end proves its worth.
