A solid styrene bar with a rectangular cross section of 3.2 x 4.8 mm. A stiff profile for beams, frames and bracing; it is cut with a knife and joined with solvent cement.

A cross section of 3.2 x 4.8 mm puts this strip among the heaviest solid profiles that can still be cut with a modeling knife rather than a saw. There is so much material in it that it does not sag under its own weight over a longer span, and that is exactly why it serves wherever a structure has to carry something: the frame of a hall, the frame of a semi-trailer, a longitudinal member under a cargo bed, or the bracing the rest of the build stands on.
White polystyrene is not cut in one deep pass. Run several light scores along one line and then snap the strip over the edge of the table. The cut comes out square and a few strokes of abrasive paper true up the small burr. Liquid cement does the joining: brush it into the seam and it fuses the surfaces together, and once dry such a spot holds better than the surrounding material.
The surface takes paint even without a primer, but a thin coat of surfacer brings out later shading and reveals any unevenness in a joint. A longer piece can be bowed slightly over a stream of warm air and holds its shape once it has cooled.
It pays to choose a single section for the whole framework and to make up any differences by cladding afterwards. A frame assembled from one thickness holds right angles far more readily than a mixture of several different strips, and it does so even after the cement has dried.
