A heavy styrene bar 3.2 x 6.3 mm and 35 cm long. For beams, lintels, support blocks and the load-bearing elements of structures.

A solid rectangular section is among the heaviest that can be bought as a ready-made rod. The dimensions of 3.2 and 6.3 mm give a side ratio of one to two, that is, the proportion of a classic wooden beam, and a length of 35 centimeters covers even a substantial lintel or longitudinal member without joining.
The conversion shows why it suits the larger scales better. In 1:24 the section corresponds to a beam of about 8 by 15 centimeters, in 1:35 it works out at 11 by 22 and in 1:48 already at 15 by 30 centimeters. Those are the dimensions of ceiling beams, of blocks under heavy vehicles and of the timbers on which scaffolding stands.
It is best cut with a saw guided in a jig; at this thickness a knife would leave an angled face that you would then have to true up with a file anyway. The surface takes wood texture willingly: just run a wire brush or a saw blade along the longer side and chip the corners irregularly. Before gluing large assemblies, lay the joints out dry, because the solvent gives you only a short time to adjust the position of a part.
When building scaffolding or a grid it pays to set up a simple frame of rulers on a board and seat the rods into it; the vertical elements then stand square without measuring and the whole assembly dries without twisting.
