A styrene strip 0.6x2.3 mm in section and 35 cm long, sold singly.
Responsibility details are not available.
Six tenths of a millimeter can already be felt: the strip will not bend without resistance and, once glued in place, it forms a distinct relief that casts a shadow of its own. The width of 2.3 mm corresponds to eight inches at 1:87, that is the typical size of a diagonal brace, the side rail of a ladder or a scab on a wooden beam.
The profile is supplied in a length of 35 cm, one piece per item.
The most reliable route to a straight truss leads through a template. Draw the outline on paper, cover it with clear tape so that nothing sticks to it, and lay the individual members straight onto the drawing. Cut the diagonals to the actual gap between the chords already in place, not to a calculation - otherwise small deviations add up.
Let the joints set, and only then lift the structure off. Handling it too soon will rack the whole frame, and it cannot be straightened again.
It is a good idea to take the cut edges back with a sanding sponge so that they do not show as white burrs under a dark finish. A steel structure is imitated by a gray base coat followed by stippled rust, a wooden one by a warm brown tone and a wash into the corners of the joints.
On trusses the consumption grows faster than expected: every diagonal adds roughly half the length of a bay. Before you start cutting, sketch the structure at actual size and add the lengths up. A spare full-length profile almost always comes in handy, and the leftover will not go to waste on the next model.
