About product

Alclad II Mil-Spec RLM65 Hellblau (Pale Blue) - enamel 30 ml

A shade from the Mil-Spec modeling line by Alclad II. This is an enamel, that is a solvent-based paint - it is not an acrylic and it does not thin with water. The Mil-Spec line is mixed at a consistency suited to an airbrush: the paint can be sprayed straight from the bottle, dries quickly and leaves a matte finish. The bottle holds 30 ml.

About the RLM65 shade

RLM65 Hellblau is a light blue shade from the German prewar and wartime RLM standard, used on the undersurfaces of aircraft. It is among the most widespread undersurface colors of the first period of the Second World War and also appears on naval machines. A pair of upper green or gray fields with blue beneath is a typical mark of early camouflage schemes; later the palette of the undersurfaces shifted toward lighter and grayer tones.

Use

  • Spray with an airbrush straight from the bottle; if you need to thin the paint or clean the airbrush, use enamel thinner, never water or an acrylic thinner.
  • Apply over a surface treated with primer - the line is tuned to Alclad Surface Primer.
  • Before decals and weathering, seal it with a clear coat compatible with enamel, for example the acrylic Aqua Gloss or the Klear Kote clears.
  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before every use, as the pigment settles to the bottom.
  • Enamels dry more slowly than acrylics - let the coat cure properly before you touch or mask the surface.

Who the paint is for

For modelers who work with an airbrush and want a shade ready for immediate use without mixing and hunting for the right thinner ratio. Enamel chemistry also suits work where weathering with oil paints or washes is planned - once cured the coat is durable and takes careful masking.

The paint contains organic solvents: it is flammable, so work in a well-ventilated area, away from children and open flame, and use a respirator and eye protection while spraying.

FAQ

No. It is an enamel based on organic solvents. Neither water nor acrylic thinner is compatible with it - they would curdle the paint. Use a thinner intended for enamels both for thinning and for cleaning the airbrush.

The Mil-Spec line is mixed so that it can be sprayed straight from the bottle. Thinning is a matter of tuning the particular airbrush and pressure, not a necessary condition.

The paint is formulated for an airbrush. A brush works well for touching in detail and small areas, but an airbrush handles an even coat over a large surface more reliably.

With a clear coat that enamel tolerates - the acrylic Aqua Gloss or the Klear Kote clears are obvious choices. A gloss intermediate coat prevents decal silvering.
