Rolling Pin NECRONIC — a roller with a science-fiction pattern

The pattern brings together the mechanical and the sepulchral: geometric lines, grooves and stylized ornament of the kind that suits the walls of the tombs of a long-dead civilization and the surfaces of the machines waking up out of them alike. The roller impresses the structure into rolled-out modeling compound around its whole circumference, so one pass gives a continuous strip suitable for facing a wall or for a base.

How to work with it

• Roll the compound out evenly and impress it in one pass; a geometric pattern gives every hesitation away more than an organic structure does.
• Put the sheets together so that line meets line; a join that does not match shows at once with regular patterns.
• Trim the sheet with a sharp knife along the nearest groove of the pattern, not across the ornament.
• Create the damage you want on the finished piece in the soft compound — not afterwards in the cured surface.
• Wash the roller right after use, while the residue of compound is still yielding.

Painting a metal surface

A pattern of this kind is usually painted as metal. A dark base, a metallic coat or drybrushing and a dark wash into the grooves all work well; cool green or blue glazes in the recesses then give the surface a charged cast. Apply metallic paints only over a smooth base and at the end, because they are harder to overspray and to mask.
