Sand is a light sand with a yellowish cast. In the Federal Standard 595 chart it holds the number 33531, where the leading three marks the matte group and the second digit the yellow family of shades. That is exactly what sets it apart from sand tones in the brown group: beside them it looks brighter, and it does not read cool even in shadow.
Light sands serve over the large areas of camouflage schemes, but they suit small items meant to come forward on a model just as well: tarpaulins, straps, crates and baggage. Paired with a darker brown or green it creates a contrast that keeps the shape of a model legible even in a photograph. A light area also takes dust and a wash well, so every further step of weathering shows up markedly on it.
Wash and degrease the area, so that the paint is not pulled off when the masking tape comes away. Stir the contents of the bottle down to the last settled pigment, or the first coat will be weaker than the ones after it. Spray thin and with pauses; a single heavy coat drowns the fine definition of the panel lines and builds ridges on the edges. A light shade lets a dark surface show through, so count on several coats. For thinning, use a thinner intended for this range of paints, as a thinner from another range can curdle the paint into grains.
For modelers who need a light sand as a shade in its own right and want it tied to a standard number. The package contains one bottle of paint of 17 ml; a thinner and other accessories are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
