About product

Mirage Hobby Sanding Stick 120/180

Mirage Hobby's sanding stick has a dual grit of 120 and 180 — each side of the tool carries different abrasive. This is a modeling tool, not a kit: you do not get parts to glue, but a tool for leveling and smoothing a model. The practical advantage is exactly that dual combination: one tool covers both coarse and follow-up sanding, so you do not have to put the stick down and reach for a second one.

Use

  • Grit 120 (coarse) — removing flash, leftover sprue and casting-block stubs, coarse leveling of surfaces and edges, knocking down a larger excess of filler.
  • Grit 180 (finer) — follow-up smoothing of a surface you just leveled with the coarser side.
  • Always work from coarser grit to finer. A lower number means coarser abrasive, a higher number finer. The most common beginner mistake: a fine grit no longer smooths out scratches left by the coarse one — it only polishes them, so they stand out even more under paint.
  • On thin edges and delicate plastic, press lightly; let the stick do the work, since pressure only clogs the abrasive.
  • Check the surface against the light as you go — scratches show up better after a coat of primer than on bare plastic.
  • If the plastic and paint allow it, sand wet: it creates less dust, the abrasive clogs less, and the surface comes out smoother.

Who It Is For

For anyone who builds plastic models or figures, or works with resin, and needs to reliably clean up parts of seams, flash and sprue stubs. The coarser 120/180 pair suits mainly the first, rough stage of the work — for final polishing before painting, it is best to follow up with finer grits from another tool or sandpaper.

Safety: do not inhale sanding dust. Work in a ventilated area, use respiratory protection, and ideally sand wet. Resin dust is irritating — respiratory protection is a must with resin parts.

FAQ

Each side carries different abrasive: 120 is coarse and removes material quickly (flash, casting blocks, leveling), 180 is finer and smooths the surface right after coarse sanding. It saves you from switching between two tools.

It is the abrasive grit. A lower number means coarser abrasive, a higher number finer. Always work from coarser to finer. A fine grit no longer smooths out scratches left by the coarse one — it only polishes them, so they show up more under paint.

We generally recommend wet sanding: it produces significantly less dust, the abrasive clogs less, and the surface comes out smoother. Let the tool dry thoroughly after use.

For the rough stage, yes — it levels seams, flash and casting blocks. Before painting, though, you would usually follow up with finer grits (around 600 and up) so no visible scratches remain from the coarse sanding.
