What the stencils can do

A regular hexagonal grid cannot be drawn freehand; as soon as one cell goes out of true, it shows on the area immediately. A stencil gets around that work. It is laid on a finished base coat, a second shade is sprayed over it, and once it comes off a pattern with sharp edges is left. Depending on how strongly you apply the second color, the pattern comes out either boldly or only as a faint shift of shade recalling light breaking on the surface.

Finish and size

According to the name the stencils are in a self-adhesive finish, so they stick even to a curved surface and you do not have to hold them by hand or tape them down. The letter L and the 9 mm size tell the size of the pattern apart within the range; the same range is also made in size S with a pattern measuring 6 mm. A larger cell suits broad parts and larger scales, a smaller one suits fine work.

How to work with them

• the ground has to be dry, clean and degreased, otherwise paint gets under the edge
• lay the stencil on and press the edges down with a toothpick or the tip of a pair of tweezers
• apply the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat runs under the edge
• lift the stencil off once the paint has flashed off, slowly and at an angle, not straight up
• try the pattern on a scrap beforehand, so that you know the resulting contrast

Who they are for

For builders of models and figures who are not satisfied with a plain area and want to get a regular structure onto it without drawing it by hand. They come into their own on vehicles with a camouflage grid, on machines from the science-fiction world and equally on bases and accessories for scenes, where the surface is meant to read as a regularly divided panel.
