Separator Triming Knife

What the tool is for

This is a cutting tool from the group of modeling knives. It is used where a part has to be separated and the excess material left behind cleaned up, that is, when preparing parts before gluing. A sharp blade makes a clean cut, after which only a minimum of work with sanding paper remains. The details of the design, the shape of the blade and its possible sharpening or replacement are given on the packaging and in the manufacturer's instructions.

How to work with it

Always cut on a surface and away from yourself, never toward the fingers of your other hand. Lead the blade a little away from the part rather than tight against it, so that it does not cut into the surface. Remove the remaining material only by sanding, because cutting tight is a common cause of a broken-off edge. Do not press hard: a clean cut comes from sharpness, not from pressure. On thicker material make several light passes one after another instead of one stroke right through.

Care and safety

A blunt blade is more dangerous than a sharp one, because it slips and calls for more force. As soon as it starts tearing the material instead of cutting it, stop working with it. Put the knife down with a cap on or into a stand, never loose on the bench top, and do not use it as a lever or a screwdriver, as the point is too thin for that and will snap off. Keep the blade free of dried glue residue, which worsens the way the cut runs.
