Abteilung 502 Sky Blue - a modeling acrylic paint

A light sky blue from the Abteilung 502 acrylic line. The binder is acrylic and it is thinned with water or a thinner for acrylics. The shade belongs among the light tones, which are used both on their own and as a lightening component and as the color for the last, lightest accents.

Glazing and layering

Light colors can be applied in two ways and each gives a different result. A covering coat lays down the full shade, but on a dark base it needs more coats and easily floods detail. A glaze, by contrast, is made with heavily thinned paint which does not cover but only tints the coat beneath and gathers in the recesses. It is precisely by glazing that smooth transitions are built on figures and equipment: a base, then several glazes toward the light and finally a spot highlight of the highest places. The key is not to hurry, to let each glaze set and to make rather more weak ones than two strong ones, which create visible edges. With glazes the brush is wiped on a cloth, so that the excess paint does not gather in one place.
