Four dancing couples in a ratio of 1:87 caught in mid brisk step. Suitable for a hall, for a dance floor in the open air or for a bandstand on a village green.

A dance can do on a layout what no other scene can: it concentrates people in one spot and gives them a shared reason for being there. Eight figures in a small area do not read as a crowd but as an event. And because dancing is recognized from the stance at first glance, the model does not have to explain anything with a caption or a backdrop.
The four couples are dancing to a brisk rhythm, which comes to eight separate figures in all. The way they hold themselves matches the faster social dances of the middle of the last century, when couples let go of each other and took hold again. A hall with a wooden floor suits the styling, but a barn cleared out for a Saturday evening or a plain plank stage put up on a village green will serve just as well.
The commonest mistake is to set the couples out evenly over the area. A real dance floor tends to be denser in the middle and thinner at the edge, where the onlookers stand. It therefore pays to turn the couples in various directions and to move one right to the edge, as if it had just danced off. If the scene is inside a building, it needs open doors or a large window, otherwise nothing of it will be seen on the layout. The outdoor version makes do with a string of lights strung between poles; warm light behaves like a magnet on a model and draws the gaze exactly where the builder wants it. A few figures set out a little way off with a glass in hand also suggest that the party has its quieter edge.
