The tar-dark finish of submarine decks in an already faded form is captured by the acrylic shade U-Bootwaffe Teerfirnis Tf 99 Faded from Lifecolor.

Tar finish was a functional matter on submarines: it covered the decks and the areas exposed to water and looked dark, almost black. Teerfirnis Tf 99 Faded is a Lifecolor acrylic shade that captures its later form; the word Faded in the name says that this is a variant faded by service, not a fresh finish.
The difference between a fresh and a faded tone is fundamental on a model. A wholly black area kills shape, because it swallows both shadows and highlights and nothing is left of the division. A faded position, on the other hand, keeps enough light for edges, hatches and gratings to stand out on it. On a large smooth area such as the deck of a submarine, that is exactly what makes the difference between a model that can be read and a black blot. At the same time a very dark tone will reveal every unevenness in the application, so the area is built up in thin steps and checked against the light as you go.
For builders of submarines who build a vessel after a longer spell of service, and for modelers who are looking for a very dark tone with some light left in it instead of a pure black. It will serve well everywhere a dark area is meant to stay readable.
