This textile face mask came about at a time when a maker of modeling chemicals extended its range to accessories for everyday wear. The graphics were designed by the urban artist Carlos Corres and the pattern is based on the camouflage used in built-up areas: broken shapes in gray and beige tones that break up an outline.
The mask is sewn from two different fabrics. The outer layer is polyester of 110 grams per square meter with a water-repellent and antibacterial treatment, and the inner layer is breathable polyester of 140 grams. According to the supplier the fabric has UNE-0065/2020 certification, which is the Spanish standard for reusable hygienic masks.
The supplier recommends washing the mask and states that it will keep its properties roughly to the twenty-fifth wash. Wash it after every wearing and let it dry out completely. Leave out fabric softener; it clogs the fibers and reduces breathability. Drying on a radiator or a hot cycle in a tumble dryer can damage the treatment of the fabric before the stated number of cycles is reached.
The cut follows the shape of the face and it is held by two elastics behind the ears. For the mask to hold its shape it has to bed down over the bridge of the nose and under the chin, and it should not be pulled about with the fingers while worn. Between wearings a fabric pouch will do it good; loose in a pocket with keys it gets dirty on both sides.
The mask suits work with sandpaper, sweeping a workshop or mixing loose materials, where what matters is coarse dust and comfort. It is not a filtering half mask with a replaceable cartridge and it will not replace a respirator when spraying paint; equipment intended for organic solvents belongs there.
