While the older finishes of training opponents were built on browns and greens, later practice moved to gray patterns. The reason was simple: at great altitude and against cloud a machine in graduated grays is harder to spot than in contrasting terrain camouflage. Multi-field patterns thus arose in which neighboring areas differ by only a tone or two, and it is precisely for those that these eight are mixed.
The package carries NATO Black, Dark Gull Gray, Pinkish White, Medium Gunship Gray, Underside Blue in the FADED version, Aggressor Gray, USAF Medium Gray and Black. The two blacks differ in temperature, so they can be used on finishes of different ages as well as on panel lines. The pinkish white serves for the light fields of a pattern and for brightening larger areas.
Two shades from this package do not come as separate bottles, in other words part of the palette comes only in the set. The rest can be bought individually if one tone runs out sooner than the others.
Application has its rules. With gray patterns it pays to work from the lightest field to the darkest and to handle the boundaries with a loose stencil, so that the transition is not sharp as a cut. Let the coats dry thoroughly, otherwise the paint underneath will lift during masking. The faded blue belongs on the undersides of the fuselage and wings, where light falls as a reflection and the finish therefore reads differently from the upper surfaces. The difference between the upper and lower halves of a machine tends to be more pronounced on a model than you expect, and it is worth not suppressing it.
