A non metallic imitation of steel rests on a single principle: the highlight is not painted with pigment but with the difference of light and shadow. The set gives four cold tones for that, Dark Sea Blue, French Blue, Snow Blue and White. From them a blade, a pauldron or a helmet is put together as a continuous scale from the deepest blue to a white point, and silver does not appear in it even once. The advantage of the procedure is that a figure looks equally good in a photograph and under the spotlight of a display case, where metallic pigments go out.
Placement decides, not the number of layers. The upper surface of a part gets a light band, the lower stays dark and a sharp division runs between them. A cutting edge, edges and rivets are finished off with a white point, which is laid right at the very end and with a very small brush. A direct proportion applies: the harder the transition between the dark and the light field, the more polished the metal the eye sees. A long blended transition, by contrast, reads as matte or draw finished steel.
The cold scale suits knights, mechanical constructs and the weapons of heroes from fantasy games. The shades mix with one another and are supplemented by other acrylics of the same line without trouble.
