A scene on a base stands or falls with the moment it captures. This item from the Basing Bits line brings shaped elements representing a projectile flying out and the expanding flash at the muzzle of a barrel. Thanks to them a figure or a vehicle stops merely standing and begins to act in the eyes of a viewer.
The elements arise by three-dimensional printing, which with shapes as fragile as these manages sharp tips and thin spurs better than a classic mold. Each piece is separated carefully from its carrier, the cut face is evened up with a fine file and freed of grease. A drop of super glue is enough to stick it on; with translucent shapes it pays to reach for the variant which leaves no white bloom.
The most convincing flash is built from the lightest center outward: a white core, around it a deep yellow and at the edges orange passing into red. A faint veil of dark smoke sprayed with an airbrush will give the whole depth. The dimensions of the elements match figures of the standard military size, so they can be combined with ordinary ground equipment and with infantry.
The Basing Bits line came about for builders of bases and intimate scenes and, besides natural motifs such as tufts of grass or stones, it holds a group of combat effects as well. Because all the items of the line are made to the same size of figure, they can be mixed freely: grass goes under the feet of a rifleman, a stone behind him and this effect above his barrel.
An effect of a shot makes sense only when it agrees with the rest of the scene. Aim the barrel before you stick the element on, and make sure the path does not point into empty space or into your own figure. It also pays to leave a free space around the point of impact, so that the eye has somewhere to go on.
