A scene in front of a shop window for a layout in HO scale: two men, three women and a boy absorbed in what is behind the glass.
Responsibility details are not available.
A shopping street with nobody at the windows looks like a backdrop. This set solves exactly that: six figures who look into the glass, think it over and argue about it.
A boy points at something in the window while his mother calls him back to her with a gesture. One of the men is plainly deciding what to buy, and beside him a woman holds on to her handbag. Another woman points at goods behind the glass and the man at her side just looks on with his hands in his pockets. In all, then, two men, three women and one child.
The figures are made to a ratio of 1:87. They come out best when you set them close to the glass and leave only a few millimeters between them and the window. A figure further away loses its connection with what it is looking at, and the scene falls apart into randomly standing people.
It pays to take care over what is behind the glass. A reduced printed photograph of goods stuck on from the inside is enough, and the scene makes sense, because the gaze of the figures leads somewhere. If you also light the window from behind, the figures will read as silhouettes in an evening scene, and the boy with his outstretched arm becomes the most striking point of the whole stretch of street.
A scene at glass will take more detail than any other, because a viewer watches it from close up and for longer. It therefore pays to spend time on what surrounds the figures too: a bin by the entrance, a sign with the opening hours, a bike rack or a wet patch on the paving. Every such element adds a second that somebody spends at the scene, and it is from those seconds that the impression of a whole layout is built.
