About product

Tamiya XF-12 J.N. Grey – flat acrylic paint, 10 ml

Tamiya XF-12 J.N. Grey is a modeling acrylic paint in a mini bottle with a volume of 10 ml. It is not a kit but a paint intended for application to finished or part-built models. The letters XF in the Tamiya designation system mean a flat surface. The abbreviation J.N. refers to the Japanese naval air service – so it is the light gray shade that the undersides of Japanese naval aircraft carried above all in the Second World War.

Watch out for a mix-up: XF-12 versus XF-14

These two paints are easily confused in listings, but they are not interchangeable. XF-12 J.N. Grey is the gray of the naval air service, whereas XF-14 J.A. Grey is the gray of the army air force. They are two different shades belonging to two different branches of the armed forces. Before buying, check which branch the machine you are building represents – the difference shows on a finished model and a specialist will spot it.

Use

  • The undersides of Japanese naval aircraft of the Second World War.
  • Airbrushing as well as classic brushwork.
  • Thinning and cleaning with Tamiya X-20A thinner.
  • A gray base for later highlighting, shading and modulation of large areas.
  • Small gray parts, accessories and elements of dioramas.

Application tips

Shake the paint thoroughly. For the airbrush thin it with X-20A to roughly the consistency of milk and apply it in thin coats – a heavy coat floods the engraving of the panels. A flat surface is the correct final look for military vehicles, but always spray a gloss varnish under decals: on a flat base the edge of a decal silvers, that is it shows through as a film around the motif. Once the decals and the weathering are dry, go over the model with a matte clear coat back to a uniform flat.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of Japanese aircraft of the Second World War who want a shade matching the naval air service, not the army one. A volume of 10 ml is enough for a model in a smaller scale or as an addition to a palette.

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. Use it in a well-ventilated space; protect your airways when airbrushing (a respirator). Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

XF-12 J.N. Grey is the gray of the Japanese NAVAL air service, XF-14 J.A. Grey is the gray of the Japanese ARMY air force. They are two different shades for two different branches of the armed forces and they are not interchangeable.

Flat. The XF line at Tamiya designates flat shades. For a glossy look a separate gloss varnish has to be used.

Tamiya X-20A thinner. Thin the paint to roughly the consistency of milk and spray in thin coats.

It is not recommended. On a flat surface a decal silvers – a film shows through around the motif. Spray a gloss varnish first, and once the decals are dry go back over the model with a matte clear coat.
