About product

Somua S35 in 1:100 scale — a Zebranomodel kit

The 1:100 scale is the world of collections. A tank fits in the palm of your hand, a whole unit lines up side by side on a shelf and the build takes a fraction of the time a large model demands. Zebranomodel is building an exceptionally wide range of French, Soviet and other hardware in this scale, so a continuous collection of one battlefield can be assembled from it. The number of parts, the material and any decal sheet are given in the manufacturer's instructions and on the box.

The real subject

The Somua S35 was a French tank intended for the cavalry units, introduced in the second half of the 1930s. It was marked by cast construction of both hull and turret, which gave it characteristically rounded shapes and solid armor protection for its day. A single crew member sat in the turret and had to observe, load and fire at the same time — a design solution typical of French tanks of the period, which in practice limited the rate of fire. The vehicle carried a 47 mm gun. In 1940 the type was among the best armored machines in its category.

Building and painting tips

In 1:100 the main enemy is the thickness of the paint. Apply it very thinly, ideally with an airbrush or with well thinned acrylic paint and a brush, otherwise the cast shapes and the fine edges will disappear. Apply a thin primer before painting — on small parts paint holds poorly without it and rubs off during handling. The rounded cast surfaces come out well if, after the base shade, you go over them lightly with a dry brush in a lighter tone and draw a thin wash into the recesses. Multi-tone camouflage can be suggested on such a small model with a fine brush; check the exact period scheme in the literature, though. The model looks good on a small base — in 1:100 you can manage one from a scrap of modeling compound and sand.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of French armored vehicles of the late 1930s
  • Modelers building extensive collections in one small scale
  • Tabletop gamers who work with figures and vehicles in 15 mm
  • Anyone who wants a quick build with minimal demands on space

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The 1:100 scale means a very small model that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. It is intended mainly for collections and for small bases.

Best with a primer and then well thinned paint in thin coats. A heavy coat in this scale floods both the cast shapes and the edges.

The 1:100 scale corresponds to the common 15 mm gaming scale. Check compatibility with a particular gaming system in the rules of that game.

Whether a decal sheet is present is given in the manufacturer's instructions and on the box.
