A plastic kit of the American shuttle orbiter Atlantis in 1:100 scale from Tamiya. The model represents the machine as she appeared on her final mission and offers a richly detailed surface, an openable payload bay with an optional installation, movable main engine nozzles and a rudder with the speed brake, which stays movable once assembled. Inside you will find a well-worked flight deck, the main engine and the landing gear; the box also holds two astronaut figures and a stand for a striking display out of the landing attitude.
The shuttle was a reusable space glider that launched like a rocket and came back to Earth like an airplane. Atlantis belonged to the NASA orbiter fleet and flew dozens of missions during her career; it was she who closed the whole program with the final mission in the summer of 2011. The characteristic feature of the orbiter is the thermal protection system of thousands of ceramic tiles, which shielded the airframe from the heat of reentry, and the large payload bay from which satellites and modules for the International Space Station were released.
The most demanding and the most rewarding part is a faithful rendering of the thermal protection. Spray the upper white surfaces in fine coats and separate the dark shield underneath with careful masking. Pick out the fine gaps between the tiles and the panel lines carefully with a thin wash so that the surface does not look flat. Finish and paint the payload bay and the flight deck before you close up the fuselage. Apply the decals over a smooth gloss coat and finally seal the whole model with a satin clear coat so that the markings blend into the surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
