A model of a Czechoslovak heavy fortification work in 1:1000 scale from the Czech maker ROP o.s. The subject is the infantry casemate R-H-S 76 U lomu, meaning by the quarry, one of the surface works of the Hanicka artillery fort in the Orlicke hory mountains. At this scale a work tens of meters long fits into a few centimeters, so the model captures above all the overall shape of the casemate, the way it is divided up and how it is set into the slope.
The Hanicka fort lies northeast of Rokytnice v Orlickych horach and belongs to the system of heavy fortifications built in the second half of the 1930s. It is made up of six surface works linked by underground passages, but construction was not finished by the autumn of 1938. The U lomu casemate was concreted in September 1937. Infantry casemates formed the perimeter defense of a fort: they covered the approaches and the neighboring works with flanking fire and protected the entrances to the underground. The work is among the most accessible parts of the site.
A model at so small a scale does not stand on a large number of parts but on a clean surface and a convincing setting in the terrain. Sand the surfaces lightly before painting, break the burrs off and fill the joints. A light gray base captures a concrete surface, a dark wash over it brings out the joints and shadows, and a dry brush in a lighter shade picks out the edges. Darken the embrasures and entrances so that they do not look flat. Add fine scatter and low static grass to the surrounding terrain; in 1:1000 scale very fine materials are enough, and coarse scatter gives the scale away at once.
The model is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, a base and terrain materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
