About product

CFM56-2A for the Douglas DC-8 72/73 in 1:144 scale

Resin engine nacelles for modelers who are building the four-engine Douglas DC-8 of the late series in 1:144 scale. The set replaces the nacelles from a plastic kit and is fitted to the mountings under the wing. It is not a model of the aircraft, but a detail accessory to one.

The engine and its installation

The 72 and 73 subtypes belong to the Super 70 series, which was a conversion of the older DC-8s at the end of the 1970s. The original narrow engines with a small bypass ratio were then replaced by substantially thicker CFM56 units, which arose from the cooperation of a French and an American manufacturer. The difference is obvious at first glance: the slim long nacelles gave way to short and massive ones, the aircraft grew quieter and was given a longer range, so it extended its service mainly in freighter form. Anyone building a DC-8 decides precisely according to whether they want the machine in its original or in its re-engined form. The designation of the subtype is meanwhile tied to the length of the fuselage, not to the engine, so the 72 and 73 versions share the same powerplant.

Working with resin

Large castings tend to hang on a wide pour block and have to be cut away with a fine-toothed saw, ideally in stages and with the casting firmly supported. After cutting, lay sanding paper on a flat board and sand the surface with a pull toward you, until it seats without a gap. Always wash resin before gluing and painting; nothing holds on mold release agent. Make the joints with super glue and use a respirator while sanding, as the dust from resin is finer than from plastic and stays in the air longer.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Douglas DC-8 of the late subtypes in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want to capture the re-engined form of the aircraft
  • More experienced builders used to resin and super glue
  • Collectors of classic airliners

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was given substantially thicker CFM56 engines in place of the original narrow units. The nacelles are shorter and more massive and the aircraft is markedly quieter.

It will not. The older subtypes had completely differently shaped nacelles and mountings. The set matches the re-engined machines.

With a fine-toothed saw, in stages and with the part supported. Plastic nippers would crack the brittle casting.

Yes. Residue of the mold release agent prevents paint and glue from adhering; warm water with dish soap and a soft brush are enough.
