A plastic kit of the elegant rocket from the classic American science fiction film of 1950, worked out in 1:144 scale by the manufacturer Pegasus Hobbies, which has long specialized in movie and science fiction subjects. The finished model represents the typical slender rocket of the golden age of science fiction, a pointed fuselage on three stabilizing fins.
Rocketship X-M is among the pioneering works of postwar science fiction cinema: the film about an expedition which ends up at Mars instead of the Moon came to the cinemas in 1950 and, together with other pictures of that time, defined the look of the space rocket in popular culture, a long spindle-shaped fuselage, a shiny metal surface and a landing on the tail fins. It is exactly this archetype that the X-M rocket embodies, and that is why it remains a favorite subject for collectors of retro science fiction.
The key to a striking result is a perfectly smooth fuselage: fill the seams left after gluing the halves and sand them away to nothing. A metal look is best achieved with a glossy black base and metallic paints applied with an airbrush in thin coats; work with the metallic paints only at the end and hold the model in gloves while handling it, so that no fingerprints are left on the surface. A fine panel wash will give the fuselage a sense of scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
