About product

Front mud flaps for the Tiger I Ausf. E, 1:16 - an Aber photo-etched set

This is not a model of the tank but an accessory for it. The photo-etched set replaces the front fenders, that is the mud flaps, on a large model of the Tiger I Ausf. E heavy tank in 1:16 scale. It is made by the Polish company Aber, which specializes in photo-etched and turned accessories. The designation in the name refers to the machines deployed in Tunisia with the 501st heavy tank battalion.

The real subject

The Tiger I was a German heavy tank of the Second World War, armed with an 8.8 cm gun and protected by thick but structurally simple vertical armor. Its fenders over the running gear were of thin sheet metal and were among the most heavily stressed items on the vehicle; in the field they routinely bent, deformed or were lost altogether. That is exactly why plastic fenders look unnatural on a model: to scale, their thickness is several times greater than that of the real sheet.

Building and painting tips

First cut the plastic parts away and sand the surface underneath them flat. Break the photo-etched parts out of the fret with a sharp blade on a hard surface, and never tear them out. Make the bends on a bender or between two blades so that the edge is straight along its whole length. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied drop by drop with a pin, because ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on metal. Treat the metal with primer before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold and will rub off during handling. The large scale allows you to take the deformation of the fenders a long way: a slight bend or a suggested dent looks convincing and is exactly what photo-etched fenders are bought for.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large vehicle models in 1:16 scale.
  • Modelers who object to the excessive thickness of plastic fenders.
  • More experienced builders with experience of photo-etched parts and cyanoacrylate glue.
  • Anyone interested in realistic weathering and suggested service damage.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory of photo-etched metal that replaces the front fenders on a model that is already built or under way. The base model is not included in the package.

Cyanoacrylate glue, applied in small drops. Ordinary cement for plastic will not join metal, because it has nothing to bite into.

Yes, we recommend it. Without a primer the paint holds badly on smooth metal and rubs off the edges during handling.
