The North American P-51B Mustang is an American single-seat fighter of the Second World War. The B standard was still built with a full fuselage spine and a framed canopy, that is before the later variant with the bubble canopy. On such a machine the instrument panel is the place the pilot watched throughout the flight: it gathers the basic flight instruments, the powerplant indicators and the controls within reach.
This is the instrument panel of the P-51B in 1:2 scale, that is a stand-alone piece at half real size. It is not an accessory for an aircraft model but an object in its own right, displayed on a desk or in a display case. At this size even the small things stand out that would be lost on a model in a usual scale: the dial faces, the scales, the lettering and the complexity of the front wall. What exactly the package contains and in what order to proceed are given in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.
Wash and degrease the surface before painting, because fingerprints will show under the paint as blotches. Lay the base coat down thinly and evenly so that the fine edges and the lettering stay legible. Deal with the dial faces and scales only on a dry base, with a small brush and with your wrist supported. A dark wash will bring out the recesses and the engraving, while a lightly drawn dry brush will pull out the edges of the controls and the bezels of the instruments. Count on the finished piece being looked at close up, so it pays to work in thin layers and not to hurry.
