1:20 Grosser Hund

The real subject

The subject is a machine from a science fiction setting, listed under the German designation Grosser Hund, meaning big dog, with the nickname Dachshund. German-sounding names are typical of this corner of science fiction modeling and are usually part of its storytelling. The closer placing of the machine in the world it comes from is set out in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer.

What kind of kit this is

A plastic kit in 1:20 scale. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted, so the finished model only comes about through the builder's work. The order of the steps, the placing of the parts and the recommended glue are given in the manufacturer's instructions. 1:20 scale is a rewarding one for this kind of hardware: the parts are large enough for sensitive painting and for fine wear, and the finished model carries some weight on a shelf.

Building and painting tips

Try the parts dry first and only then glue them; with larger assemblies it pays to draw them together with a rubber band until they set, so that the seam stays closed. Fill and sand the joints in visible places, because on a smooth surface every unevenness shows. Wash and degrease the model before painting and lay a primer coat on it. Science fiction hardware suits wear, but it only looks convincing when it follows the logic of a real machine: abrasion on the edges the crew touches, runs under hatches, dust and mud on the lower surfaces, rubbing around moving parts. Since the subject is not tied to a period photograph, you have a free hand in choosing colors and markings.
