The Range Rover Classic is the first generation of the vehicle which, at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, joined two categories that had been separate until then: the capability of an off-road vehicle and the comfort of a passenger car. In design terms it rests on a ladder frame with rigid axles and coil springs, which by the standards of the day gave it unusually decent comfort off the road as well. Permanent all-wheel drive with a center differential was likewise a novelty on a civilian vehicle of the period. The body is typical for its angular, restrained line, its floating roof, its split tailgate and its high stance. It was this simple silhouette that was kept essentially unchanged throughout the production of the first generation, and today it is among the most readily recognizable shapes in British motoring.
An automobile model stands or falls on its paint. Wash the body properly to rid it of remnants of release agent from the mold, and build it separately from the chassis. Remove the mold seam on the edges of the fenders and the pillars with gentle sanding and check the surface under a light, as on an angular body every wavy edge is visible at first glance. Apply the paint with an airbrush in several thin coats, the last one slightly wetter, and fine-tune the gloss with a clear coat and polishing only once it has cured completely. Never sand chromed parts from the sprue: cut the gate off and touch the mark in with a chrome marker or with paint. Glue the glazing only with a cement for canopies or with gloss clear varnish, as ordinary cement clouds glass. Flat colors and a fine wash into the stitching of the seats bring the interior to life; on an off-road vehicle a discreet dust on the wheel arches and the underside suits it too, but with an anniversary form a showroom-fresh state makes more sense.
