With car models, 1:24 is the most rewarding scale of all: once finished, the model is over twenty centimeters long, so it can carry a well worked-out interior, glazing and chassis and at the same time still fit in an ordinary display case. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the actual contents of the box, that is the number of parts, the marking variants and any accessories, follow the manufacturer's current packaging.
The Range Rover Classic is a British off-road vehicle introduced in 1970. It brought together two things that until then had gone separately: the abilities of a true off-road car and the comfort of a passenger car. It was built on permanent four-wheel drive, live axles sprung on coil springs and a V8 engine; the body used aluminum panels on a steel frame. It began as a two-door, the four-door version was added in the 1980s and gradually moved the vehicle into a more luxurious segment. It was built in various forms until the mid-1990s, and the angular silhouette with the split tailgate made it one of the most recognizable shapes of the British motor industry.
With a model of this kind the body is the main discipline. Sand and smooth the joints and the marks left by the mold before you reach for paint, because every imperfection stands out on a gloss finish. Work through a filler primer, then the base color in thin coats and finally a clear gloss varnish, which you polish gently once it has cured. The frame and the chassis, by contrast, will take a matte surface and light weathering, which looks convincing on an off-road vehicle. Glue the glazing with a cement for clear parts that does not fog, and finish the interior before closing the body up. Always lay the decals on a gloss base.
