The 1:24 scale is the home scale for car models, so the finished model fits well into a display case among other vehicles and at the same time offers plenty of room for detail in the cab. The Renault Estafette was a light commercial van built from the late 1950s for several decades. What was fundamental was the layout with front-wheel drive and the cab over the front axle, thanks to which the vehicle had an unusually large and low-set load area for its small external dimensions. The bodywork was supplied in many configurations, from a closed van through a flatbed to vehicles for trades and public services, and the Estafette became an ordinary part of the French street scene. That is precisely why it is a rewarding addition to dioramas with an urban setting.
On boxy bodywork with large areas what counts is the preparation of the surface: fill and sand the joints carefully, or every irregularity will show under gloss paint. It is sensible to spray and fit the cab and the load area before you close the bodywork up. Fit the glazing only once the finish is complete and glue it with cement for clear parts, which does not fog the surface. Spray the bodywork with an airbrush in thin coats over a primer; on single-color commercial vehicles a semi-flat or slightly glossy surface looks good. Realism is helped by gently picking the seams out with a dark wash and only a restrained weathering of the wheel arches.
