This is a detail accessory from the Greek manufacturer GasPatch models. The package contains two machine guns in 1:24 scale in the variant designated as the Fokker Version. It is not a model of an aircraft or a part of one but replacement armament, which the modeler fits into a fuselage under construction or onto a flying surface. In the large 1:24 scale the fine structure of the barrel cooling jacket stands out, something injection-molded plastic usually cannot capture.

The real subject

The LMG 08/15 machine gun, known among modelers by the nickname Spandau after the arsenal that built it, was the standard fixed aviation weapon of German First World War aircraft. In design it was based on the Maxim system; in its aviation form it was lightened and fitted with an air-cooled perforated barrel jacket. It fired forward through the propeller arc by way of a synchronizing gear. The particular installations differed between aircraft types in their mounts, sights and the routing of the ammunition belts.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent to remove the remains of the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutting disc, never break them off. It is best to sand wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin. Apply primer before painting, then a dark metallic shade; a fine wash will accent the perforation of the jacket and a dry brush will bring the edges out.
