A masking set for the AH-1G Cobra in 1:32 scale from SX-Art makes spraying the dense framing of the glazed cockpit of the attack helicopter easier. Intended for the ICM kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a masking set, that is, an accessory for a model — not a helicopter kit. The pre-cut masks are stuck onto the glazing and, while you spray, cover the areas that are meant to stay transparent. Without them you have to cut every frame out of tape by hand, and on the AH-1G in particular that is a very laborious discipline. The target kit is the ICM one.
The cockpit of the Cobra is narrow, tall and divided into a series of flat panels with dense framing running between them. In 1:32 scale the glazing is large and every inaccuracy on a frame is visible from a normal distance — a strip of varying width or paint that has run under the edge spoils the impression of an otherwise well-built model. A pre-cut mask holds the width of the frame along its whole length, the same on both sides of the machine, and saves hours of cutting tiny strips of tape.
The AH-1G was the first attack helicopter built in series. It appeared in the 1960s in the United States and was based on the proven powerplant and rotor system of an older utility machine, around which the designers built a new and considerably narrower fuselage. The crew consisted of two men seated one behind the other; the front seat was placed lower, so the characteristic stepped glazing gives the helicopter a shape by which it is recognized at once. The narrow fuselage reduced the frontal area of the machine and improved its speed compared with converted utility helicopters.
Before masking, wash the glazing in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let it dry so that the mask holds well. Lay the mask down with tweezers, press the edges along the frame down above all, and spray thinly and at a right angle; first the interior shade or the base coat, and only then the final color. Take the mask off slowly and at an angle away from the edge while the paint is not yet fully cured. Remove any remaining adhesive with a toothpick, not with a metal point, which would scratch the transparent part.
This is not a helicopter model but a masking accessory. Paints and the kit are not included in the package. Check that the set matches the kit you are building before you buy.
