The Canadian Lancaster with serial number KB840, the code WL-N and the nickname Nan served with No. 434 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. A decal sheet in 1:32 scale transfers its markings onto a model.
Responsibility details are not available.
Serial numbers beginning with the pair of letters KB belong to aircraft built not by a British line but by a Canadian one. Production ran in Ontario and its output carried a separate version designation, because it differed in engines supplied from licensed American manufacture and in a number of internal details. The airframe KB840 belongs to exactly this group.
The code pair WL was allotted to No. 434 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force, one of the units of No. 6 Group of Bomber Command, which concentrated Canadian crews at airfields in northern England. The individual letter N was completed on the nose by art with the name Nan, which is the spelling word for the same letter used in the radiotelephony alphabet of the day. The name of the machine therefore did not come about by chance but directly from its position in the squadron.
The printing is intended for classic wet application. After a short immersion a motif slides off the paper onto a varnished surface, is straightened and left to cure. Only a dry film takes a decal softener, which draws it into the panel joints. A sealing coat of varnish then unifies the sheen and the edges of the decal disappear. With large motifs it pays to work in sections and to let every part dry thoroughly, because a large film ripples easily while being moved and a crease once dry can no longer be straightened.
