A sheet of decals from the Czech manufacturer HGW with the grain of light pine wood, intended for models in 1:32 scale. Pine has a more pronounced and more contrasting grain than neutral light woods, so it is legible even on smaller parts and suits everywhere the texture is meant to be clear. The form is transparent: the print is translucent and the resulting shade comes about together with the color of the base that you spray on the model beforehand.
Wood was perfectly ordinary on First World War aircraft and on interwar designs. Plywood fuselage skins, spars, propellers, floors and cockpit side panels and instrument panels all had a visible grain that in a large scale is almost impossible to paint evenly over a whole surface. A printed sheet simplifies this work substantially and gives a repeatable result.
Spray the base with a smooth covering paint in a light sand to ocher tone and varnish it over with a gloss varnish. Cut the segments so that the direction of the grain matches the real structure of the part, and build larger areas up from several pieces with the joint hidden in a seam or behind a rib. Once soaked, let the decal release, adjust the position, press the water out and let it dry thoroughly; on rounded shapes use a softener. Finally bring the surface together with a semi-matte varnish. With pine wood, fine toning with an oil paint or a glaze looks good and gives the grain depth.
