Curtiss P-40M gun bays 1:32 photo-etched set (Eduard)

A detail set in etched metal from the Czech maker Eduard, aimed at the gun bays in the wing of a model of the Curtiss P-40M fighter in 1:32 scale. Its purpose is to let the model be built with the wing panels open so that you can see inside, which in a large scale is a rewarding way of bringing a model to life. Etched metal makes it possible to render the lining, the bulkheads and small structural detail in the right thickness. The set is not a kit of the aircraft, but an accessory to a model you have to obtain separately.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-40 was a single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled V12 engine and a radiator under the forward fuselage. The P-40M version belongs among the later forms of the line with the Allison engine, and you can tell it by the arrangement of the cooling shutters on the forward fuselage. The armament of the type was placed in the wing and access to it was provided by removable panels on the upper and lower surfaces. In the British Commonwealth machines of this generation were designated Kittyhawk.

Building tips

The set usually calls for cutting the panels out of the plastic wing, so first think the sequence through calmly and mark it out. Cut from the inner face, where any scratches will not show. Cut the etched parts off with a scalpel and fold them over a bending tool. Glue with cyanoacrylate in drops. Once painted, bring the open bay to life with a dark wash into the corners and a fine dry brush on the edges, so that the detail is not lost under the paint.
