A detail set in etched metal from the Czech maker Eduard, aimed at the landing flaps of a model of the Curtiss P-40M fighter in 1:32 scale. On the real aircraft the flaps are a slender structure with a ribbed interior that injection-molded plastic can never capture because of its wall thickness. Etched metal solves that and makes it possible to build the model with the flaps lowered, which on a large model in a display case is a striking sight. The set is not a kit of the aircraft, but an accessory to a model you have already bought.
The Curtiss P-40 was a single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled V12 engine and a radiator under the forward fuselage. The P-40M version belongs among the later forms of the line with the Allison engine, and it can be told from the earlier versions by the arrangement of the cooling shutters on the forward fuselage. In the British Commonwealth machines of this generation carried the name Kittyhawk. The aircraft was used as a fighter and as a ground-attack machine.
Reckon on having to cut the plastic flaps out of the kit and rework the opening in the wing, so this means cutting into the model. Cut the parts off with a scalpel; do not snap them. Lead long folds over a bending tool, as the metal ripples when bent by hand. Glue with cyanoacrylate applied in drops rather than over the whole face. Degrease the metal before painting and give it a primer. The inside of the flaps is usually sprayed in the interior color, and in a large scale it pays to suggest the shadows with a wash.
