About product

1:32 Douglas A-26B Invader bomb bay — an Eduard photo-etched set

This item belongs to the line of full photo-etched sets of Eduard. It differs from the masking sets of the same manufacturer in that a mask is only an aid for painting and disappears once the work is done, whereas photo-etched parts are glued onto the model permanently. From the smaller pre-painted sets of the Zoom line, which concentrate mainly on the cockpit and arrive finished in color, a full set differs in extent: it covers the whole area it is made for and expects you to paint the parts yourself. According to the name it is aimed at the bomb bay, that is the space that is clearly visible on a model with the doors open.

Why photo-etched and not plastic

The interior of a bomb bay is in reality made up of thin beams, ribs, hinges and runs of piping. Injection-molded plastic cannot make them thin, because a mold needs draft angles and a minimum wall thickness. Photo-etched sheet measures tenths of a millimeter, so it is the only way to get the structure onto a model in a matching thickness. In 1:32 scale the bomb bay is moreover large enough for a viewer really to look into it.

Building tips

Leave the parts on the fret until you need them and cut them off with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with cutters. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before gluing, otherwise neither paint nor glue will hold on it. Make the folds in a bending tool or between two blades, and bend long parts gradually along their whole length. Hard sheet can be softened by a brief annealing over a flame, but take care with small parts, which burn easily. They are bonded with super glue applied on the tip of a piece of wire, not straight from the tube. Use a primer intended for metal before painting.

Who the set is for

  • more experienced modelers who have worked with photo-etched parts before
  • builders of large models in 1:32 scale
  • those who want to build the model with the bomb bay open
  • anyone interested in the maximum degree of detail in an exposed space

This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The model, paints, primer and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched detail set for the bomb bay space. The model itself is obtained separately.

Pre-painted parts are typical of the smaller sets of the Zoom line. With full photo-etched sets count on painting the sheet yourself, including a primer for metal.

With super glue applied in a minimal amount, ideally on the tip of a piece of wire. Cement for plastic does not hold on metal.

Rather not. Working with photo-etched parts calls for a sharp tool, a bending tool and patience. For a first experience with an etch a smaller set is better.
