The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II was an American two-seat combat aircraft that served with the US Navy, the US Marine Corps and the US Air Force and became one of the most widespread machines of its generation. It was powered by a pair of J79 engines with afterburners, and their exhaust nozzles are among the conspicuous elements of the rear fuselage. The B, C, D and N versions match one another closely enough in this area for the set to cover them together.
It is an accessory in 1:32 scale that replaces the nozzles from the kit with a more faithful rendering. Accessories of this kind are bought precisely so that the nozzle has a thinner edge and a deeper interior, because a plastic part tends to be shallow inside and that shows when the model is viewed from behind. The range of parts and the recommended procedure are given in the instructions enclosed with the package.
The parts are not polystyrene, so glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. Cut the excess material away a little distance from the part with a sharp blade and sand the remainder off carefully, so that the edge stays round. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap and let them dry, otherwise the paint will not hold. Try the fit dry before gluing. Apply metallic shades over a dark base and shade the transitions, because nozzles are heat-discolored and never have a single color along their whole length.
The set suits modelers who are building a Phantom in a large scale and want to refine the rear fuselage, where a plastic part shows the most. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
