About product

Five-color lozenge 1:32 - Techmod decals

This sheet of waterslide decals from the Polish manufacturer Techmod reproduces the so-called lozenge, a regular pattern of diamonds and polygons that during the First World War was printed straight onto the covering fabric of German aircraft. This variant is in five colors. It is not a kit or a model: the decals are applied to the finished surfaces of the wings, fuselage and tail surfaces of a built model in 1:32 and take the place of laboriously painting the pattern by hand.

What lozenge is

Instead of spraying camouflage onto a finished machine, the pattern was printed onto the balloon fabric with which the aircraft was covered. It was quicker and cheaper than sprayed camouflage and the result was the same on every machine. The pattern existed in several color sets, with the five-color and the four-color version differing in palette and in their use on the upper and lower surfaces. A decal reproduction is for a modeler practically the only workable way to capture the pattern faithfully in scale.

Application tips

Paint the base with a gloss coat and let it dry completely. First trace the surface onto paper and cut the sheet to that template with a small margin. Apply large pieces one at a time, with plenty of water under the film so that they can be moved. Run the seams where they would also be on real fabric, that is along the ribs. Over projections and engraved lines use a decal softener and pierce the film with a pin so that the air can escape. Finally even the whole model out with a matte coat, as the fabric of aircraft of that time was not glossy.

Who the sheet is for

  • builders of First World War aircraft in 1:32
  • modelers who do not want to paint the pattern by hand
  • anyone who needs to complete the covering after a repair or a conversion
  • more experienced modelers, as large areas of decal call for patience

This is a separate accessory. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

A polygonal camouflage pattern that during the First World War was printed straight onto the covering fabric of aircraft.

The color palette of the pattern differs, as does its usual use on the upper and lower surfaces of an aircraft.

It is more demanding than ordinary decals. Large areas call for calm, plenty of water under the film and a softener.

Yes, we recommend a matte coat. It evens the gloss out and hides the edges of the individual pieces of decal.
