About product

Luftwaffe WWII Pilot with a parachute 1:32 (Aerobonus)

A resin figure of a pilot of the Luftwaffe in the Second World War with a parachute, in 1:32 scale. Aerobonus is the figure and diorama line from Aires. The figure is meant to complete a finished model of an aircraft or a scene on the apron, and it gives a scene both scale and a human dimension. It is not a kit of an aircraft or a part of one. On a figure of this type the parachute is at the same time part of the composition, because in reality the pilot wore it as part of his seat pack and carried it in his hand or on his back before boarding.

The casting and its preparation

A resin casting holds fine relief on figures, so the folds of the flying suit, the straps of the harness and the division of the parachute pack all stay legible on the surface. Before building, wash the parts in warm water with detergent, otherwise release agent residue from the mold will stop the paint from adhering. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc; do not break them. Sand the parting seams wet and with respiratory protection, and go carefully around the face and the small straps, so that the detail is not wiped away. It is glued with cyanoacrylate; on a heavier part such as the parachute, reinforcing the joint with a short wire pin helps.

Pose and painting

Check the stance of the figure against the illustration on the packaging, because it differs from figure to figure and cannot be determined from the name. If you plan to seat the figure in a cockpit, always try it dry before gluing; the angle of the legs and arms is usually fine-tuned. Begin painting with a primer, then the skin in thin glazes with gradual shading, then the base shades of the clothing and the leather parts of the kit. Bring the folds out with a thin wash and the edges with a careful dry brush. Set the leather parts and the parachute straps off by sheen: the straps slightly satin, the fabric pack matte. Leave the helmet, the goggles and the small fittings to the end.

Who the figure is for

  • For modelers building an aircraft in 1:32 scale who want to add a crew to it
  • For dioramas and scenes on the apron
  • For builders with experience of resin and of painting figures
  • For competition models, where a figure gives the whole its scale

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the model of the aircraft are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is supplied as a resin casting to be assembled and painted.

The division of the parts is not described here. On figures of this type the parachute tends to be separate, and when gluing a heavier part a wire pin reinforcement helps.

Wash it in warm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off, sand the seams down and apply a primer. Without degreasing the paint will not hold.

The stance cannot be determined from the name. Always try the figure dry before gluing; with seated poses the angle of the legs and arms is usually fine-tuned.
