He 219 A-7 Uhu 1:32 mask set, the BASIC level (New Ware)

Self-adhesive cut New Ware masks for the model of the twin-engine night fighter Heinkel He 219 A-7 Uhu in 1:32 scale. The BASIC level is the basic step of the range and concentrates on what every build needs: the frames of the canopy glazing and the landing gear wheels. The masks are cut from thin masking tape, which can be pressed down even onto a slightly convex surface and leaves no adhesive residue on a clear part once it is removed.

Why it matters in a large scale

A model in 1:32 has glazing so large that every onlooker automatically examines the frames close up. An uneven width of frame, or paint that has run under the edge, shows here at once, while on a smaller model it would be lost. A pre-cut mask keeps the width of the frame the same on both halves of the cockpit and the cut matches the shapes of a particular kit, so lengthy measuring and trying out is done away with.

The real subject

The He 219 Uhu was a twin-engine night fighter of the period of the Second World War. It had a nose gear, a crew of two seated back to back and a radar with antennas projecting ahead of the nose. The A-7 version is one of the later production forms. Only a limited number of machines was built, but they appear all the more often as a model in a large scale.

Procedure

• Wash and degrease the glazing first, then lay the mask on with dry tweezers
• Spray the frames of the cockpit in thin coats, as a heavy coat runs under the edge
• Mask the wheels only once the mask is applied to the hub, and spray the tire last
• Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set, as on a fully cured coat the edge chips

For builders of large scales who want the glazing solved quickly and accurately, and for anyone who does not care to spend an evening cutting frames from tape before the build. Given the basic extent it is also a sensible first experience of masks for someone who has not used them yet.
