1:35 HELLAS (Greece) – signs and notices for a diorama (ETA diorama)

The sheet from ETA diorama is a printed paper accessory focused on a Greek setting: signs, notices and small announcements of the kind that hang on walls, shop windows and posts. It is not a model and not a waterslide decal – you get printed paper for trimming by hand. Motifs of this type establish where a scene takes place before the viewer notices a vehicle or figures; a lettered surface is the quickest way in a diorama to convey a place.

How to prepare the signs

A paper sign without a carrier looks flat. Cut the motif out with a small margin, glue it onto a thin plastic sheet or a piece of card and only then trim it clean – that gives a board with a thickness that can be mounted on a wire stand or glued to a wall with a visible edge. Go over the white cut with a dark paint, so that the sign does not glare around its perimeter. Notices and small announcements, on the contrary, should be left thin and glued straight onto the render, so that they stay paper.

Tips on placement and patinating

Keep to the proportions of height: both signs and notices belong at the eye level of the figures, not higher. In the southern sun paper fades and peels away, so back the corners only partly and leave one standing proud. Believability is added by a fine glaze, a thin deposit of pigment along the lower edge and light wearing through of the printing. Seal it all at the end with matte clear coat – it unifies the sheen and protects the printing from rubbing during further work on the scene.
